Law firms are starting to appear in ChatGPT and Google Gemini responses, but most are not doing so consistently. Good GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation), comes from good SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). The way you talk about yourself and how prevalent you are in traditional rankings massively helps your appearance in LLMs (Large Language Models).

This is not driven by traditional rankings alone. AI platforms do not simply list websites. They select and reference sources they consider clear, credible and relevant.

To “rank” in ChatGPT and Gemini, a law firm needs to meet a different set of criteria.

The first is clarity of content.

AI platforms favour content that directly answers legal questions. Pages should clearly explain what the issue is, who it applies to and what the likely outcomes are. Overly broad or vague content is less likely to be used.

The second is structure.

Well-organised pages with clear headings, defined sections and straightforward language are easier for AI systems to interpret. Frequently asked questions are particularly effective, as they align with how users phrase queries.

The third is authority.

Firms that demonstrate recognised expertise are more likely to be referenced. This includes Legal 500 and Chambers rankings, consistent mentions across the web, and strong backlinks from reputable sources.

The fourth is consistency across the site.

AI platforms do not assess pages in isolation. They look at the overall structure of a website. A firm with a clear set of service pages, supported by related content, is more likely to be seen as a reliable source.

Finally, relevance to user intent.

Pages need to match real-world queries. For example, “Can I claim constructive dismissal if I resign due to stress?” is far more aligned with AI search than simply “Constructive Dismissal Solicitors”.

Law firms that adapt their content in this way are already starting to appear more frequently in AI-generated responses.
