How Much Does a Law Firm Website Cost?
Law firm websites in the UK typically cost between £3,000 and £100,000 + depending on size, complexity and what the build includes. The range is wide because the difference between a five-page high-quality site for a sole practitioner and a 1000-page, SEO-structured, conversion-optimised website for a regional firm with 300 staff is huge, both in scope and in what it delivers commercially.
For most SRA-regulated firms the website is a channel through which new clients can find them, evaluate them and decide to make contact. People being referred or existing clients may review the website as well. A site that looks professional but is not structured to rank on Google, not optimised for the way legal clients search, and not built to convert visitors into enquiries is a missed opportunity.
Marketing Lawyers works exclusively with the legal sector and with SRA-regulated law firms. Our Managing Director, Ben Trott, holds an LLB and previously headed up digital marketing for a top 200 UK law firm. We have built websites for law firms across different continents and have worked with over 100 law firms across the business. We regularly build, design/redesign, and optimise law firm websites across England, Wales and internationally, and we understand what the investment needs to achieve, not just what it needs to look like.

Entry level: £3,000 to £7,000+
At this level you are typically getting a template-based build, a limited number of pages, a basic CMS, a contact form, and minimal SEO setup. Appropriate for sole practitioners launching a new practice or niche specialists who generate most of their work through referral. Not appropriate for any firm that expects its website to generate organic enquiries at volume.
Mid-range: £7,000 to £20,000+
This is the level at which a well-built law firm website becomes a genuine business development tool. A mid-range build should include a properly structured practice area section, fee earner profiles, a blog section, and an SEO foundation that gives the site a realistic chance of ranking for the terms your potential clients search.
Bespoke: £20,000 to £100,000+
At this level you are commissioning a fully custom design built around your firm’s commercial objectives, brand positioning, and target audience. This tier is appropriate for regional and national firms, multi-office practices, and any firm for which the website is the primary driver of new business at scale.
What Actually Drives the Cost of a Law Firm Website
Number of pages
Page count is the most direct driver of cost. The firms that rank well do not have thin, short websites. They have comprehensive content architectures covering not just core service pages but the specific questions clients search for. A family law firm that wants to rank for divorce-related searches needs pages on financial settlements, child arrangements, cohabitation, prenuptial agreements, pensions on divorce, and the specific scenarios clients Google. Each page costs time and therefore money to build properly.
Copywriting
This is the most commonly underestimated cost in a law firm website project. Legal copywriting requires understanding of practice areas, knowledge of how legal clients search, and awareness of SRA standards. Generic content does not rank, does not convert, and does not build the E-E-A-T signals Google now requires for legal sector content to perform. Professional legal copywriting typically adds £2,000 to £8,000 to a project depending on page count and depth, but it is the investment that most directly determines whether the finished site performs commercially.
SEO built in from the start
SEO retrofitted after a site is built is significantly more expensive and less effective than SEO built into the architecture from the beginning. URL structure, page hierarchy, internal linking, schema markup, heading structure, and content depth all need to be planned before a single page is designed. A site built without SEO consideration from the outset will typically require a substantial rebuild within 12 to 18 months. Getting it right first time costs less than fixing it later.
Technical performance
Page speed, mobile responsiveness, and Core Web Vitals are direct ranking factors. Pages with an LCP above 3 seconds experience meaningfully worse performance in competitive search results. A law firm website that loads slowly on mobile is not just a poor user experience. It is actively suppressing rankings.
Integrations
Call tracking, CRM, practice management software, live chat, and online booking all add development time and cost but significantly improve your ability to track commercial performance. Call tracking in particular is underused in the legal sector. Understanding which pages and search terms generate phone enquiries, not just form completions, is essential for making informed decisions about where to invest.
Ongoing hosting, maintenance and support – Ballpark
The cost of building a site is one-off. The cost of keeping it performing is ongoing. Expect to budget:
- Hosting: £50 to £150 per month depending on specification
- Maintenance and security: £100 to £250 per month depending on specification
Should You Use a Legal Sector Specialist or a Generalist Agency?
Generalist web design agencies can produce visually attractive websites. What they often can’t do is advise on how a practice area architecture should map to real search demand, how SRA price transparency requirements affect page structure, what E-E-A-T signals matter specifically for legal content, or how to structure a conveyancing page so that it ranks for both local and transactional intent queries.
Marketing Lawyers works exclusively with law firms. Everyone who works on your project understands the legal sector.
What CMS should a law firm website use?
WordPress remains the most common platform for law firm websites in the UK and the most flexible for SEO purposes. Before committing to a build, ensure you understand what happens to your website if you move agencies. You should own your domain, your hosting account, and your CMS access regardless of who built the site. Beware proprietary CMS platforms that lock you into a single provider.
How often should a law firm redesign its website?
A full redesign every 4 to 6 years is typical. More importantly, content should be reviewed and updated quarterly and SEO performance monitored continuously. Many ranking drops are caused not by algorithm updates alone but by competitors investing in fresh content while the firm’s own pages become stale. A site that was competitive in 2021 with 40 pages may need 80 pages by 2026 to hold the same positions.
